Children learn best through play. How do you think your infant reached all of their milestones with little understanding on instruction; they used exploration and play. Tummy time isn’t just something you do. It’s to promote strengthening muscles, help prevent the back of your baby’s head from flattening, and to get your baby ready to play! Harper hated tummy time, and being a first time mom, I don’t know who hated it more her or me. We tried it each day, but started looking for other ways to explore. I realized that I needed to put more thought into the toys that we bought for her. Admittedly, this is something that has fell to the wayside over the last two years, but has moved to the forefront of my mind in the last few weeks. I need to scale down the highly interactive toys and look for imagination toys.
Exploration and play never stop for children. So, when you’re thinking about what your fresh one year old could use for their first birthday look no further. I’m sharing my favorite list of toy ideas for a one year old.
Best Imagination Toys for a One Year Old
- The B. Parum Pum Pum (Drum) is a fantastic choice for your brand new toddler. Not only does B. Toys choose an easily identifiable color scheme, it is so unique from all the other toys at the store. I love that they are promoting what I feel to be a completely gender neutral line of toys. Enjoy the beat bug-themed instruments that feature: drumsticks, jingle bell, maraca & clacker, tambourine, and an egg! All of these instruments are packaged neatly in a playable drum which I’m sure will be the best part.
- The Giga Tent High and Seek Fred Tunnel is adorable and will really get your child moving. It’s not just about crawling through the mysterious tunnel to find the other side. One-year-olds can stand on one in playing peek-a-book to the other side, toss their balls to the other end, or even use it as their secret hide out to snuggle their favorite stuffed animal or sneak in an unplanned nap.
- Melissa & Doug Wooden Building Blocks Set should be a staple in any child’s toy chest. The options for their creativity. Plus, did you know that stacking blocks is a development milestone? I didn’t until Harper’s preschool interview. This 100-block set comes in four colors and includes nine shapes. You won’t have to worry about your child out-growing this purchase any time soon.
- The EverEarth Jr. Size Ramp Race is simple in color choice and design making it perfect for toddlers. You won’t have to worry about a thousand little pieces or an extra noisy race ramp. The only sounds you may hear are the revving engine or delighted giggles coming from your one-year-old. It’s a more complex introduction to cause and effect, and I think the simplicity of the cars make this one a must have!
Rockabye turned the rocking horse of the past on it’s head by creating their soft stuffed rocking animal and vehicle line! These rockers are lower to the grow, offer softer support seats, and really get your child’s imaginative gear spinning! If you haven’t seen these children’s rockers, you need to check out their trains, pirate ship, forest friends, zoo animals, and the Rockabye bugs. The complete line can be seen on the Rockabye Rocker
