We’re the parents who never formally started a bedtime routine until our child started Pre-K. Honestly, up until then we didn’t need a bedtime routine. I was a stay at home mom with very few commitments during the week and Harper went to sleep whenever we did. I personally preferred to sleep in and it worked for us. However, when school was approaching quickly, I found myself yearning for some extra adult time after 8:00PM where I could watch my shows, finish up work, and just hang out with my husband. Before we implemented our plan, my husband and I both asked ourselves what do we do to start a bedtime routine? It wasn’t a foreign concept to us, but seemed so simple yet so hard at the same time.

Let’s just say that the first night was the worst experience ever with more crying than sleeping and nothing seemed to work. Did I mention we were also trying a peaceful transition to get Harper to sleep in her own bed? Midway through the week of a lot of bedtime failures, I made a list of what had to be completed at bedtime to help Harper wind down and get enough rest for her school day.

How We Decided to Start a Bedtime Routine

  5. Put on Pajamas
  6. Wind Down (We read bedtime stories)

The key to a successful bedtime routine is consistency and being willing to make minor adjustments to your plan to keep it working. I was never a fan of a water before bed because I feared there would be a potty accident that could easily be avoided. Harper loves having the last drink of water and has proven she can wake up and get to the bathroom if she needs to go.

What Bedtime for a Four-Year-Old Looks Like

While there is still a lot of learning going on for adequate bathing and teeth brushing, I find that this established routine is perfect to start letting go a little bit. We’re working on balancing parental help and independence. For example, I supervise my child’s bath time and give her instructions on how to wash her own body. I still tackle the big job of washing her hair (it’s long), but we’re teaching her to tackle that task too. We split teeth brushing time with Mommy doing a thorough job all around and Harper gets to continue brushing until she is done. It’s a great way to show her where and how to brush inside her own mouth. She’s four so it’s not always the best brushing job, but we always make sure she gets lots of praise and backup brushing whenever needed.

In the month we’ve had our bedtime routine in place, Harper has accepted the routine and now is more eager to complete each task. She’s been more willing to eat most of her food at dinner time, gets her pajamas on without a fight, and loves picking out books for story time.
